All is not lost though for those who think they are going to be left behind, dreading that postcard or Facebook post that says 'Wish you were here'.
Last minute holidays used to be the bread and butter of those who were good at saving a pound or two. On the beach they did brag to new acquaintances about how they'd got their five star all inclusive hotel, booked only last night, for only a hundred quid each, watching those who'd paid thousands for the same holiday seethe away. But then everything changed. Tour operators cut back on their stock meaning no last minute cheap deals and in many cases no last minute holidays at all. Whilst times have changed, with a little bit of effort it's still possible to get a last minute break at a very reasonable cost, thanks in the main to the cheap flights.
A quick scour of price comparison sites shows that Scandinavia, Northern European countries, Ireland and Spain can all be reached for under £50 return and, depending on dates, it's possible to fly to Dublin for £20.
Car hire can cost as little as £7 a day in Spain, even in August, whilst if you're not fussy about accommodation, clean, cheap and cheerful hostels come in at around £15 a night in many of the countries. Add it all up and you'll find you can get a week in Spain for around £120 including car hire proving that the last minute cheap holiday isn't dead yet.
'Car hire and accommodation can be two of the more expensive parts of a holiday. Whilst we work hard to give you the lowest possible prices on car hire at each of the hundreds of destinations we serve, it's worth looking at a variety of destinations to compare price. Whilst Spanish cheap flights can be got for £50, car hire is only £7 a day, Dublin cheap flights are much cheaper still but car hire can be three to four times that of Spain. The best value deal will involve a combination of the prices for each element of the holiday and it can be a fun challenge finding it.'
